Hennebeau announces to the miners that new work sites will be opened, but there are fewer of them than teams and the price of a skip is set too low. As anger rumbles, Etienne tries to convince the local residents to set up a solidarity fund. The Maheu family's grandfather is no longer fit for work, putting a severe strain on the already strained family budget. The Maheudes suggest that Etienne come and live with them in exchange for rent, a decision that does not sit well with Catherine.

The strike breaks out and is particularly well attended at all the pits. It even gained momentum in the face of inflexible management. It was the beginning of another hellish period on the horizon, that of hunger. The meagre savings of the revolting group would not last long. All the more so as the company has sent in its heavyweights, commanded by Bressan, to break up the movement. Chaval, for example, forces Catherine - whom he now has under his thumb - to come with him. Faced with the risk of demobilization, Etienne manages to keep the miners together.
