Pedro Bial interviews a resident of an area controlled by a militia, the sociologist José Cláudio Souza Alves, and the photographer Nilton Claudino, also known as Índio, who in 2008 infiltrated a community in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro to document the actions of militiamen. When his disguise was discovered, he was tortured for seven and a half hours, along with a reporter and a driver.
